Social Distancing Revised

Social Distancing Revised

Gaining Freedom
There is something strangely familiar with life these days with only a week into this mandated period of containment.  It is as though the world I lived in as a child in a small secluded northern town has merged with the world I have been living as an adult in the hyper-busyness of a large metropolitan city.  Perhaps that is what influences my view in light of this COVID-19 global pandemic when it comes to social distancing. I grew up in a small town in northern Canada.  We were surrounded by relatives and those who did not live there visited often.  School was a ten minute walk in either direction and the candy store was even closer.   There were speed limit signs but no one obeyed them.  People drove much…

You Have Fear…Now What?

You Have Fear…Now What?

Freedom in Christ, Gaining Freedom, Spiritual Warfare
In these days of isolation, social distancing in attempts to contain the SARS-COVID-19 and COVID-19 virus strains, the trauma response for many heightens.  The first indicator was the rapid depletion in our grocery stores of toilet paper. In more recent days, now that most stores have a handle on the supply of toilet paper, we find that milk, eggs, bread and chicken are the items that many are hoarding as though it’s the end of time. To go outside feels like you are risking your life as a few on my community Facebook page are talking as though they are ready to shoot those who dare leave their homes. I get it, you have fear…now what?  What are you to do with it?  Fear is an instinctual response.  It is…

How Then Shall We Respond?

How Then Shall We Respond?

Kingdom Living
Information these days travel at the speed of light.  Thirty years ago, adults woke up to the morning paper on the doorstep and then gathered in front of the television for the 6:00 nightly news.  Current events and concerns traveled by “Word-of Mouth”, which was said to spread as fast as a wildfire. The world seemed to move at a slower pace in those days as compared to today.  We may have known less about world events at any given moment, but we knew more about those in our neighborhoods.  We had more time to think about what was being said before the next news publication and broadcasts were available.  We had time to consider the impact of the information the media was presenting and how we would live our…

Dropping The Gloves

Dropping The Gloves

Warrior Training
Judges 6:25-35 Dropping the gloves in the world of hockey is a declaration, “the fight is on”! This kind of battle is wildly cheered by fans while players watch shouting enthusiastic support to their teammate. The fisticuff lasts seconds and then it is over. It is all part of the game! Gideon dropped his gloves the night he built the “Lord is peace” altar. On that night he broke down the Baal altar and tore down his father’s Asherah pole. The reaction the next morning was swift, “Gideon must die for what he has done!”. But that is not what Gideon’s Dad thought. In defense of his son, Joash jolted the people into a new reality, “If Baal really is a god, he can defend himself.” (Judges 6:32). Baal never…

Doing Hard Things Demands Assurances!

Doing Hard Things Demands Assurances!

Inspiration
Judges 6:17-24 Bungy jumping is fun, apparently! I have never done it. If I would do it I would want assurance that I would live to tell how fun it was. So, I wonder, “What assurances would I need before I jumped?” One kind of assurance I would want is the right answer to the questions, “How new is the bungy cord? Trust me it has to be really new! When asked to do hard things warriors need assurances. Often these are linked to our sense of identity. How we see and think about ourselves increases or decreases our “can do”. Gideon was no different. He needed assurance the invitation from God was not a dream or his own desire to end the Midianite oppression. Gideon discovered over the course…
